Last week, I got vibes and upstairs hallway inspiration. It’s because I finally redid the two shabby, old lanterns that hang there. With gilded wax, they came back to life, and for the first time in 2,5 years, we actually have two lamps lighting the hallway.
However, it’s immediately showcasing the fact that the walls are in bad shape and the entire hallway needs a little TLC. It must have been some sort of white at some point, but I think ‘olive’ better describes the current situation. It ain’t great.

Upstairs hallway inspiration
So, for my upstairs hallway inspiration, I’m thinking of wallpaper for the upper section of the wall, and wainscoting for the lower section.
The practical reason for this is that the wall is in bad shape and needs repair, and I don’t feel like doing a job that’s so terrific it can be painted afterward.
I’m thinking of patching it up a bit, filling the holes, sanding them to a smoothish finish, and then covering the whole thing in wallpaper. Lazy? Maybe. Pick your battles, I’d say.
Also, I’d love to have wallpaper in the house, especially in combination with wainscoting. I think lushly decorated walls belong in a castle!
1. Room for Tuesday

I love this hallway, with the subtle flower print on the wallpaper. It doesn’t overpower the runner on the floor and goes well with the white paint on the wainscoting.
For us, I would opt for a wallpaper that is a bit more outspoken. If only to make sure the bumps in the wall underneath go unnoticed 🙂 This golden floral wallpaper would create this style but draw a bit more attention.
2. Sandra Baker Interior Styling
If this isn’t upstairs hallway inspiration I don’t know what is. Absolutely love this stunning design! Since the hallway we’re decorating leads to the girls’s bedroom I want it to become a happy spot in the house.
Not sure how my husband would react to pink wallpaper surrounding him when he dresses though…
I think I would sooner opt for a flowered wallpaper with a neutral background, to ease his manly nerves.
3. The DIY Mommy

A good chinoiserie wallpaper can do wonders for a space, as proven here in a powder room. For us, it would be too cold in coloring, as we get green light in the upstairs hallway (due to our park outside). But a pretty peach-colored chinoiserie wallpaper would work amazingly to add some color and life to the space.
Plans for our upstairs hallway
At the moment, I’m leaning towards a golden flowered option, even though my heart screams for something bolder. It’s the first time I using wallpaper in the château and I don’t want to scare my husband too badly.
I’ll put wainscoting up at the same height as the window and might add a shadow box trim in it too. I’d have to check, since the giant wardrobe already has patterns, the door to Juliette’s room too, and the door towards the rest of the castle has a different pattern from the other two. Add in the runner and the wallpaper, and the whole might get a bit too patterny. Although, go big or go home, right?
