Hurray! I’m officially grown up! The laundry sorting station I created in an old wardrobe is the current light and love of my life. Things are so much more organized in the bedroom, plus laundry is taking me much less time to do. Wins all around!

Elements of my laundry sorting station
I always looked at laundry sorting stations as something very American. I don’t know why, maybe because Americans (in general) have much more space in their homes for these kinds of things? In the Netherlands, the laundry just gets tucked away somewhere in the attic.
So, building this felt like an absolute luxury!
I made six drawers with baskets, a plank for my iron and other laundry-related supplies (who am I?), and a high-but-small space to tuck away my ironing board and drying rack.
I was thinking about foldable situations for my ironing board, but let’s be honest: I don’t use it that much. So tucking it away is luxurious enough for me.

Drawers instead of planks
Only a few blogposts are on the website at the moment I write this, and yet this is the third time I’m writing about drawers. ‘Drawers of a Châtelaine’ would be more fitting right now!
What can I say? I just really love drawers. For the laundry sorting station I was looking at planks to store the baskets on, but I could just see things falling. Balancing the basket on the edge of the plank when sorting the laundry, leaning it on my hip, and unavoidable the basket falling down when I move.
So, drawers! Once again. Now my laundry sorting station is in use I can say: very happy with my choices. I just bounce them open and close when I’m sorting everything and nothing is falling down!
What to think about when creating a laundry sorting station?
For me, it’s actually the paragraph above that sums this up: I thought about how I move when I work. If you’re a person who irons one shirt, goes do other things, and irons another, a foldable ironing board might be better for you. I usually gather a bunch of items and do one long session. Taking the board out once and tucking it away once does not need a foldable board.
Moveable laundry baskets was a must too. I take them down to the washing machines and haul them around the château to put everyone’s clothing back in place. Fixed laundry sorting baskets would make me carry around bunches of clothes and let them fall everywhere. Apparently not letting things fall is important to me!
How to build a laundry sorting station?
I created a crooked T-shape inside the old wardrobe in our bedroom. That’s easier said than it was done since everything is so very crooked around here!
Of course the gaps had to be caulked first (that’s a 500-year-old building for ya!) After that, I painting everything, including the new planks. Seriously, paint can make a project come together. Go the extra mile to create a unified look and your project will look so much better!
It was a tight fit to get the T to the right height, fitting both my ironing board and my iron. I can never buy something with different dimensions again!
To attach the T, I created pocket holes on the right side. I’ll never look in there, so that way the screws are hidden from sight. The pocket holes attach the top plank, as well as to the back of the wardrobe and the floor.
On the left side I made the six drawers. Five technically, because the lowest had no drawer and the basket stands directly on the floor. I calculated the size of each space by taking my laundry baskets into account.
On the right side I measured them out, then used a level to correctly cross them over to the other side.

I had no clue a laundry sorting station would make me this happy, but here we are. Hope my happiness draws you over the line to create this absolute mom-luxury for yourself!
