Give Google one go to search for French fashion, and you will see a French striped sweater. Sometimes it seems like all the French wear are their classic marinière bretonne.
But it’s no exaggeration! Just last weekend we visited a brocante market in Sarlat-la-Canéda and I counted multiple striped sweaters, on young and old.
Why are French striped sweaters so popular?
They started out as part of the outfit of marines. Then they were adopted by anyone who went out boating, since the goal is to make you more visible should you fall overboard.
Who goes boating? The rich and leisurely. And so, the French striped sweater became a synonym for wealth and status.
Nowadays, they’re no symbol anymore, except for Frenchness maybe. If you are actively trying to achieve French elegance in your wardrobe, start with a French striped sweater. They look good on anyone!
Expensive or affordable?
As with anything, there’s a plethora of choices out there. There are brands to look into when you want to do it right, like the French brand Armor Lux. There are the more luxurious (French) brands like Sézane, who offer several different types of the French striped sweater.
However, you don’t have to look any further than Amazon if you want to create a perfect French winter look!
Sporty looking stripes
I love this more casual version of the classic sweater. You could totally slip this on in the morning, jeans and loafers to go with it, and look classy for anything you’ll do that day.
The Dark One
I love having a lighter and darker colored marinière at my disposal. This one is pretty cute, with the little buttons on the wrist.
The French striped sweater in real life
A perfect classy way to use your striped sweater! Flowing pantalon, a pretty belt to go with it.
Don’t forget to keep your jewelry classic and understated. Your sweater will do the talking for you, no need to upstage that!
